End of Term 1 Wrap-Up and Looking Ahead to Term 2
As Term 1 comes to a close, it’s a great time to reflect on all that has been achieved in these first ten weeks of the school year. From the excitement of our first day back to the many learning experiences, special events, and achievements along the way, it has been a productive and rewarding term.
This term has been filled with academic milestones, extracurricular successes, and opportunities for students to grow both personally and socially. We have seen outstanding effort from students across all year levels, with many embracing new challenges and demonstrating resilience in their learning. Our student leadership teams have stepped into their roles with enthusiasm, helping to foster a strong sense of college spirit and community. The P&C Easter Raffle and other fundraisers have been a great success, with participation from families, staff, and students. Congratulations to our newly elected 2025 P&C Executive Committee, and a huge thank you to all outgoing members for their hard work and dedication to our school.
A special mention goes to our entire college community for the resilience, patience, and understanding demonstrated during the unexpected four-day school closure due to TC Alfred. These disruptions are never easy, but the way students, staff, and families adapted and supported one another was truly commendable. Ensuring the safety of everyone was our top priority, and we are grateful for the cooperation and flexibility shown by all.
Despite some disruptions due to wet weather, including the postponement of the Primary Cross Country to Wednesday (morning) 23 April, and our Secondary Cross Country to Wednesday (afternoon) 23 April, we appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding.

Enjoy the break!
With assessments now wrapping up, students are encouraged to use the holiday break to rest, recharge, and prepare for the term ahead. Thank you to all students, staff, and families for your hard work and support this term—we couldn’t do it without you!
Wishing everyone a safe, happy, and enjoyable break and look forward to welcoming you back in Term 2, refreshed and ready for another exciting term.
Richenda Wagener
College Principal
As we wrap up term 1, I’d like to extend a warm thank you to all our parents and carers for your support and engagement in our school community this term. We recognise and value the role that you play in your child’s education.
Our students have committed themselves to their learning and it is important for their confidence that collectively we acknowledge their application and effort. A question to reflect on, for us all, is What does success look like for you this term? The response will be different for all of us because success looks different for all of us. This is an important conversation to have with your child. Achievement is one of our CARES values and having these conversations regardless of age, acknowledges that achievement can be more than academic results.
Attendance at school everyday matters. This includes late arrivals and early departures. We understand that ‘life happens’, however when students are not at school, they are missing out on important learning time. Our school day of learning begins at 8:45am and finishes at 2:55pm.
Homework Centre year 4-6 students
From the beginning of term 2, the homework centre will be offered to year 4-6 students only.
Please contact the administration for more information about homework centre.
Bookings fill up quickly so set a reminder to secure a place.
Primary assemblies
This term, the weather has not been on our side for holding our Primary Assemblies. We are working on what future assemblies could look like that still allow student success to be celebrated, important messaging shared and CARES focus highlighted. We will keep you updated through email, text messaging and social media.
This week Ms Blackburn and I visited classrooms to hand out Student of the Week awards. We read the reasons for the awards and individually acknowledged each student.
When I practiced my GEMs for the day, what are you grateful for today? It was the privilege I had to celebrate these student successes and positive staff impact on student learning.
Have an enjoyable Easter break with your friends and family and we look forward to seeing you in term 2.
Briohny Cuskelly
Head of School - Primary
Learning is at the heart of every interaction in our school, and the key to learning success at Whites Hill is students knowing that they have agency over their own success. Now that the busyness of assessment and exams have passed it is important to reflect on the magnitude of learning that students have engaged in across the past 10 weeks. When reflecting, it is critical that students acknowledge the level of effort that they have expended to receive their academic results.
At Whites Hill we believe a growth mindset is an important element of student agency. Students taking responsibility for and being the leader of their own learning is integral to our values of Imagine and Believe.
Growth Mindset is a belief that growth comes as the result of hard work and not solely innate ability or talent. Research undertaken by Professor Carol Dweck, confirms that students who are acknowledged for hard work are more likely to take on learning that challenges them, thrive on challenge, and as a natural consequence increase their resilience, ability, and eventual outcomes.
One of school values is Achieve and at Whites Hill we believe that everyone can learn and grow academically, socially, and emotionally. As a school we are committed to ensuring that the special qualities, interests, and character of each of our students is developed. I am confident that each of our students has experienced a personalised journey of growth during term 1 and we look forward to discussing these learning journeys with our parent community at parent teacher interviews on Monday April 28th from 3:30pm.
As the term ends, I also ask students and their families to ensure that the correct uniform items have been purchased in readiness for term 2. Our uniform is one element of our great school that provides us with a sense of belonging. I am confident that all our students are proud to belong to the Whites Hill community, therefore I look forward to seeing students wear their uniforms with pride during term 2.
I would also like to highlight that ‘every day is a day of learning at Whites Hill. Learning at Whites Hill is dynamic and engaging, and when students are not at school, they are missing out on opportunities to learn. Students should ensure that they are arriving at school on time each day and minimising absences so that they can maximise their exposure to learning. Our school day starts at 8:45am and our attendance target for all students is a 90%. Attendance at classes and effort are critical factors on student success. Attendance for each year level this term has shown improvement on their overall attendance rate compared with last year.
Year 7 = 91.2% | Year 8 = 89.7% | Year 9 = 89.9% |
Year 10 = 90.6% | Year 11 = 91.6% | Year 12 = 94.1% |
Thank you to each member of our community who has contributed to the success of our students this term.
Enjoy your holiday.
Samantha Hawkins
Head of School - Secondary
It is hard to believe that our first term is coming to an end. It has been a busy term interrupted by cyclone Alfred. It was lovely to see everyone back on site following a few days at home and to start back with our learning.
This term we completed the French National Assessments in Years 1 to 3. The students really enjoyed completing the activities in their booklets. We will be able to share your child/ren’s results with you during parent-teacher interviews. These results help identify specific learning areas that we need to focus on and to tailor our teaching sequences accordingly.
AEFE French Professional Development at Tingalpa State School
In week 5, we hosted French Professional Development sessions on writing, reading comprehension and reading fluency at Tingalpa. These sessions were facilitated by AEFE accredited training staff and were delivered through different modules over two days. The format was designed so teachers could join in different sessions with the aim to share what they have learnt with other teachers during staff meetings. It was great to be able to have Mrs Lamy join the team of teachers at Tingalpa.

French Bilingual Program Voluntary Contribution
We have received our first resource order purchased through the voluntary contributions. Thank you for your support of the French Bilingual Program in both Secondary and Primary through the VC. Our first order was to purchase sets of French books for literature novel studies for our Year 7 and 8.
We are compiling a resource order for our primary classrooms which will be ready for our teachers and students early in Term 2.
Through the Student Resource Scheme for Prep FBP we have purchased French cursive and fine motor skills books. These books are now used in our Prep classes at both Whites Hill State College and Tingalpa State School.

From the classrooms
This term, our Prep class explored rhymes and nursery rhymes.
Rhyming words: “dans mon lit il y a ...”

Working fine motor skills with the nursery rhyme: “Sur le Pont d’Avignon”

French book donations
Thank you for the donations of French books for the library. We have received plenty of books and are now busy cataloguing them. At this stage we will not take any more donations until we have been able to process what we currently have. We will be putting another call out when we are ready to receive more books. Thank you!
Emma Van Cuylenberg
Head of Department – French Bilingual Program | Coordinatrice du programme bilingue français
Years 1/2 A and B - A lot of learning has been happening in 1/2 classes as well as some fun. From retelling cultural stories, to looking at chance events, collecting data, teen numbers and higher two-digit numbers. We had a wonderful incursion for Science with Ambrose from Urban Utilities. He told us about his family and connection to country near Alice Springs. We created an artwork that told the story of our connection with extended family overseas or in other parts of Australia. We’ve also been busy getting ready for the Happy Hat Parade.

Year 3 proudly celebrated Harmony Day, a special occasion dedicated to celebrating diversity, inclusion, and respect for all cultures. Students, teachers, and parents came together to make this day truly memorable!
On the day of the celebration, many students wore bright orange clothing or traditional costumes representing their cultural backgrounds. It was fantastic to see such a beautiful mix of colors and styles, reflecting the rich tapestry of cultures within our school community.
Our classes are fortunate to have students from many different parts of the world. Some of our students were born overseas, while others have parents who were born in other countries. We also have First Nations students, and it was wonderful to see their cultures celebrated as well.
Harmony Day is a reminder that we are all unique, yet we share the same space, and it is important to foster respect, kindness, and understanding for everyone, no matter where they come from. We hope this celebration continues to inspire students to embrace diversity in all its forms.

PRIMARY RUGBY LEAGUE WORKSHOPS
During Week 10 we’ve had some great coaches from the National Rugby League Association run workshops for our P-6 classes. This was funded by the generous efforts of Sporting Schools Australia. The students had lots of fun participating in a range of activities.
Sports Aerobics is a high energy, dynamic sport that our College has embraced. Recently, 96 sports aerobics athletes represented WHSC at the annual MRSA (Meg Ryan Sports Aerobics) Gala.
Some of the athletes were new to the sport, but you couldn’t tell once they hit the stage. Their determination and hard work paid off as they captivated the audience with their energy and stage presence. We received excellent feedback on how our teams performed. We can only imagine what they can achieve during the 2025 competitive season. We are very proud of all our Sports Aerobics stars.

2025 HARMONY WEEK CELEBRATIONS
At WHSC we had a meaningful week celebrating and embracing multiculturalism and diversity. Harmony Week is more than just a celebration of cultural diversity; it is a reminder that our differences make us stronger, and that no matter where we come from, we all have a place in this community. This is a time to reflect on the incredible contributions of these cultures to society and to recognise the importance of inclusivity, respect and belonging. Beyond just recognising diversity, the week is about actively making space for each other, ensuring everyone feels welcomed, valued and accepted.
On Thursday, 20 March students and staff were invited to wear their traditional dress or a splash of orange. Orange is the chosen colour to represent Harmony Week to signify social communication and meaningful conversations. At our Secondary assembly our student leaders empasised that belonging is not just a word and a feeling, it’s an action. It’s something we create together.
Our college is once again partnering with The Resilience Project (TRP) to deliver an amazing program to our students from Prep to Year 12.
The Resilience Project delivers emotionally engaging programs and provides evidence-based, practical strategies to build resilience. Resilience enables children to take safe risks without fear of failure.
Your child will complete a variety of activities that introduce them to The Resilience Project’s key principles of Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness (GEM) and Emotional Literacy. Our students will be encouraged to develop positive wellbeing habits by practising these concepts on a regular basis outside of their TRP lessons.
Our Partnership Program consists of online presentations and weekly lessons for students, professional development for staff, and a Parent & Carer Hub (inc. digital presentations) for our parent and carer community. All of our parents and carers have access to The Hub. Parents and Carers can play a big role in supporting the development of positive wellbeing habits at home by checking out The Hub.
As part of our partnership, parents and carers can view a selection of videos by Hugh van Cuylenburg or Martin Heppell which explain TRP and GEM.
Did you know that regular gratitude practices have been proven to increase the amount of positives you notice in your day? You can practise these strategies any and every day, at any time of the day.
Try this: What made you smile today?

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT WHSC
We’ve had an amazing term to start 2025 and there is so much that we, as a community, can celebrate.
Each and every day we see our amazing students demonstrating Cooperation, Achievement, Respect, Enthusiasm and Safety both inside and outside the classroom. As acknowledgement for exhibiting our CARES values, students are awarded with CARES points. Students accumulate these points over the year and are celebrated at our end of term CARES celebration assembly with CARES badges and certificates as they reach certain point thresholds.
You will start to see the recipients of this term’s awards around the College proudly wearing their CARES badge for reaching the bronze level of achievement.
It is with immense pride that we recognise the vast number of students across the College who are consistently demonstrating our CARES values – keep up the great work!
The PBL Team
Sport over the past few weeks has seen many cancellations due to this continual wet weather. Where we can play sports indoors, we have made every effort for these to go ahead. Unfortunately there is not much that has been happening with regards to interschool Sport. Let’s hope Term 2 brings dry weather.
District Trials and Met East Sport Trials
District trials for a number of sports for both Lytton District, South District and Met East have already taken place. Unfortunately due to the Wet Weather, there have been a number of District and Met East Trials postponed to next term.
For those trials that have happened, Whites Hill student Tre’ has been selected in the South District Touch Football Team. He will compete next term in the Met East Trials. Well done Tre’.
There are still a number of trials to go, so if you are interested in trialling for a District/Regional Sport, please come and see me for details.
Interhouse Cross Country
The Interhouse Cross Country which was to be held on our last day of this term, has been postponed to Wednesday 23rd April in Period 3 and Period 4. The program will be changes slightly to accommodate this postponement.
The District Cross Country is in Week 3 of Term 2 on Thursday 8th May at Citipointe Christian College. More details will follow once our college team is selected from the Interhouse Cross Country.
Please feel free to contact myself with any questions/concerns with regards to sport here at Whites Hill State College- Secondary.

HUGH - YOU ARE A SUPERSTAR!
We’d like to acknowledge all the young people who were out there helping their communities prepare for Tropical Cyclone Alfred. One of those keen to assist was WHSC Senior Secondary student Hugh who helped prepare sandbags at Murarrie. We commend Hugh and other young volunteers for providing such important assistance. We are so very proud of you Hugh! Well done!
This year's theme is 'Strengthening Intergenerational Solidarity for Enduring Wellbeing', which emphasises the important role our amazing Social Worker Lisa does in the dedication, care and kindness she delivers to help build connections, resilience and wellbeing amongst our students and staff across the college.

The School Based Youth Health Nurse talks about…Exam Stress
Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances. Not all stress is bad, in fact, we need a certain amount of stress to help us get through tough situations because it keeps us alert and ready to face challenges.
The challenge is finding the sweet spot between good stress and bad stress that can make us feel overwhelmed or frozen.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed with your workload, click the link below for strategies to help you stay calm, organised and on top of things.

Holidays can be a time of stress for some young people, taking them away from friends and school supports. For some, this can lead to feelings of isolation, loneliness and stress. Luckily, Headspace has some great tips on supporting your young person during this time and some info to help recognise if they need some extra help and where to access it.
If you notice any the following changes that last for more than a couple of weeks, it might be an indication that your young person needs extra support.
Being irritable or angry towards loved one; feeling tense, restless, stressed or worried; being persistently sad or crying for no apparent reason; not enjoying or wanting to do things they usually do; engaging in more risky behaviour; changes in sleeping or eating habits; expressing lots of negative or distorted thoughts about themselves and the world.
For extra support check out the suggested support services or make an appointment to speak to your GP, or encourage your young person to reach out to the School Based Youth Health Nurse at Whites Hill Secondary College.
