Term 2 Wrap-Up
As we approach the end of Term 2, it’s the perfect time to pause and reflect on what has been a rich and productive term of learning, growth and connection across our whole school community.
From our beautiful Under 8’s Day celebrations, NAPLAN in the early weeks, engaging incursions and excursions, vibrant classroom learning, to the Twilight Expo, which proudly showcased the breadth and depth of learning from Prep to Year 12, and our exciting Synapses Ignite showcase — Term 2 has reminded us of the energy, commitment and community spirit that makes Whites Hill State College such a special place to learn and grow.
We’ve seen students demonstrate their capabilities in sporting events like Cross Country and Touch Football, take part in meaningful awareness initiatives such as Small Steps 4 Hannah, and continue to engage with the important social and emotional learning focus through the TRP (The Resilience Project). Our focus across the term has included gratitude, emotional literacy and empathy, with students continuing to build their resilience and understanding of self and others.
Our CARES values remain central to everything we do — whether it’s students showing empathy, supporting others, achieving their personal best, or taking responsibility for their learning. We thank all families and carers for supporting these values at home and working in partnership with us to ensure consistency and support for all learners.
College Calendar
We encourage families to visit our College Events Calendar, available on our school website. This calendar is linked directly to each newsletter and can also be found under the “Contact the School” and “Newsletter Archive” tabs.
We understand the busy schedules of families, and we’re working to make planning and engagement easier. By keeping the college calendar accessible online, we hope to provide a central reference point for upcoming activities. While the calendar is updated regularly, and some event details may change, we strive to keep it as accurate and up-to-date as possible to support your forward planning.
Second-Hand Uniform Donations Welcome
Have your children outgrown their uniforms? We are always grateful for donations of good quality second-hand uniforms to support our school community. If you have items that are clean, in good condition, and no longer needed, please consider donating them to our Uniform Shop. Donations can be dropped off directly at the shop during opening hours. Your support helps other families and contributes to a more sustainable school environment.
Finance and Outstanding Payment Reminders
As part of updated Department of Education policies, families are advised that any outstanding invoices will now be issued monthly, in addition to the regular statements already being sent. Please note that these invoices will be issued per individual student, not per family. If you are not currently on a payment plan and have any overdue amounts, we encourage you to contact the school office to arrange a suitable plan. We appreciate your cooperation and support in meeting financial obligations, which assist us in continuing to provide high-quality resources and opportunities for all students.
Looking Ahead – Term 3: School Review
We’d like to inform our community that in Week 1 of Term 3, Whites Hill State College will participate in a School Review led by the Department of Education’s Education Improvement Branch (EIB).
These reviews are not designed to compare or rank schools but instead provide independent, constructive feedback that supports schools to continue to improve student outcomes. All Queensland state schools participate in a review at least once every four years.
During the review, the review team will spend time at our college reviewing data, documents, and other information to gain a deep understanding of our context, performance and strategic direction. They will also meet with a range of people including students, staff, parents, and community members, and we thank in advance those who may be invited to participate.
A final report will be made publicly available on our school website following the review process.
We are proud of the progress we’ve made under our shared vision of Moving Forward Together, and welcome the opportunity for external feedback as we continue to pursue our school priorities:
- Educational Achievement
- Wellbeing and Engagement
- Culture and Inclusion
Thank you again for your continued support throughout Term 2. We wish all our families a safe and restful holiday break, and look forward to welcoming everyone back for Term 3 on Monday 14 July.
Richenda Wagener
College Principal
As we reach the end of Semester One, it’s a wonderful time to reflect on what has been a busy, rewarding, and enjoyable term. It has been wonderful to see students thriving—whether that’s out on the ovals, playing handball, climbing on the playgrounds, engaging actively in their learning, transitioning to different classrooms, or living out our CARES values each day. There’s a real sense of joy and purpose across the school, and it’s clear that our students are making the most of their schooling experience.
This semester we’ve focused on embedding Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness within our classrooms and within our settings, such as the playground.
The weekly focus topics have included prompts such as:
What is your biggest achievement at school this week (Gratitude)?
Be kind to yourself today. Do something you love. What will you do? Write it down so you remember to stick to it. (Empathy)
Choose an object and explore it with a beginner’s mind. Pretend that you have never seen it before. What do you notice? How would you describe it? (Mindfulness)
The school holidays are an opportunity to put into practice the wellbeing component of the Resilience Project (TRP) lessons that have happened in all classrooms. As a parent, you have access to the Resilience Project @home resources, available on their website. There is also an app you can download that has a wellbeing journal and resources for students of all ages.
As we head into the school holidays, we wish all our families a safe and restful break—filled with time to connect with loved ones, enjoy the company of family and friends, and take moments to relax, reflect, and recharge. May this be a time of gratitude, mindfulness, and empathy as we pause and appreciate all that the first half of the year has brought.
Briohny Cuskelly
Head of School - Primary
Term 2 has come to an end. Term 2, like all others has been rewarding, and an opportunity to grow for our students and staff. Each time a challenge has arisen this term it has been an opportunity to use our resilience skills. Resilience is not something we are born with; it is something we learn. Resilience is like getting fit and growing muscles. The more we use our muscles the stronger and more efficient they get. Resilience is much the same. When we are equipped with the right skills and mindsets each challenge we face is an opportunity to bounce forward stronger, wiser and sometimes more empathetic and compassionate.
The vacation period is an excellent opportunity to continue to engage with the positive wellbeing habits that our students are learning during PDP lessons. To support students in their daily GEM, practice the Resilience Project has an App that can be downloaded.
GEM, Gratitude Empathy and Mindfulness
Gratitude, paying attention to the things we have right now, and not worrying about what we don’t have. We practice gratitude by noticing the positives around us. An end of term gratitude activity: What are three things that went well for you this term?
Empathy, putting ourselves in the shoes of others so we feel what they are feeling. We practice empathy by being kind and compassionate towards other people. An end of term empathy activity: How will you let one person know that you are thankful for their contribution to a success or memorable moment you have had this term?
Mindfulness, our ability to be calm and present in the moment. We practice mindfulness by slowing down and concentrating on one thing at a time. An end of term mindfulness activity: Be still for 1 minute. What noises do you hear around you?
As a college we have so much to be grateful for and I would like to thank the staff, students and wider WHSC community for the partnerships that have been created this semester. Partnerships are what make our community strong and unique.
Subject Selections
The end of Term 2 is when we ask Year 9 and 10 students and their parents to start thinking about subject selections for the next school year. Over the holiday period, I encourage students to reflect on their future pathway goals and begin to think about which subjects will help them best prepare for their futures. A good way to think about which subjects to select is, ‘Which mix of skills would I like to/need to develop to be preprared for my future?’. ‘Which skills to I need to have in my future tooklit?’ We look forward to supporting our Year 9 and 10 students during Term 3 as they plot the first steps on their future journey.
Farewell to Mr Jordan
Mr Jordan commenced at Whites Hill in 2020; our current Year 12’s were in Year 7. Over the past 5 years, Mr Jordan has been a valued and engaged member of our community. Mr Jordan is an exceptional educator, and his positive influence on our students has been significant. The impact of Mr Jordan’s teaching practice and love of music was showcased at Synapsis Ignite on Wednesday the 25th of June. Mr Jordan has made the decision to move on to his next chapter, and share his exceptional skills and knowledge with a new school community. We wish Mr Jordan all the best in his next steps, and he will be greatly missed.
Healthy Holiday Habits
Over the holidays maintaining some level of routine is important. I encourage all of our students to be aware of their online activities, specifically the amount of time they are spending on social media. Engaging in physical activity and getting adequate amounts of sleep are essential to returning to Term 3 feeling recharged and prepared for the demands of the next 10 weeks.
For parents who would like to learn more about supporting their young people with their online behaviours the eSafety Commissioner has released their list of Term 3 webinars.
I wish you all a restful vacation full of opportunities to connect with family and friends.

New French learning assistants
Last week we welcomed Amelie to our French Learning Assistant team. Amelie will be working with our Years 1 to 3 from Wednesday to Friday. We are very fortunate to now have Florence, Celine C and Amelie working with our Years 1 to 3 and Celine H working full-time with our Prep students. Learning assistants provide valuable in-class support for our students.
French Bilingual Teacher recruitment update
We are very pleased to welcome Mrs Elise Hilton to our French Bilingual teaching team. Elise will be working with 2/3FA on Thursdays and Fridays. Marine will remain on Tuesdays and Meka will continue for the English days on Mondays and Wednesdays.
These last 2 weeks, Elise has had the opportunity to come in and work with Marine and myself on planning for next term. She has met the class and joined in class activities to ensure that the students got to know her before the beginning of the term and to ensure a seamless transition.
We thank Veronique D’Ursel for her support and work with 2/3FA while we finalised the recruitment process.
Bilingual Puppet Show
Next term, we will welcome Carrousel theatre to our school with a bilingual puppet show ‘Le livre de la jungle’.
This incursion will be held on Friday 1 August in the ILC for our Prep to Year 3 FBP students.
QParents notifications have been sent to families earlier this term.
New resources from the FBP Voluntary Contributions
This week we have received our latest resource order which we were able to purchase thanks to your generous voluntary contributions.
This order included sets of books for our reading rotations, library books for our older readers and some high school teaching resources.

From the classrooms – Prep Maths rotations
As I walked through the Prep classroom this term, it was great to see the students engaged in their maths rotation activities. I was impressed by their independence, their engagement and their mathematical justifications. So much learning happens in the first semester of school, it is always amazing to see how quickly they settle in the school routine and become active learners.

Le Festival
Le Festival will be held at Southbank from July 4-6 this year.

On Thursday,19 June our college held our annual P-6 Athletics Day, it was filled with incredible energy. Looking around at the smiling faces, seeing the medals/ribbons proudly displayed, and feeling the excitement in the air made this sports day a great success.
Each moment showcased pure athletic spirit. From the track events to the field competitions, every participant gave their absolute best. The determination on the students' faces, the support they showed one another, and the respect they demonstrated throughout the day exemplified the true sportsmanship that we encourage here at WHSC.
We had some great achievements and our results from our 'Fast and Furious' event - that is the fastest from each year level were as follows:
- Prep - Simeon and Katarina
- Year 1- Mason and Nahla
- Year 2 - Nathaniel and Agathe
- Year 3 - Clement and Charlotte
- U9 - Amber and Noah M
- U10 - Micah and Scarlet
- U11 - Sajjad and April
- U12/13 - Bentley and Irlanda
- 1 Mitchell 319 points
- 2 Oxley 280 points
- 3 Cunningham 221 Points

The 1/2 classes have had a wonderful few weeks of learning and some other activities outside the classroom. Under Eights’ Day was great and the farm animals were a favourite – a pig tried to escape! The Big Bang Science Incursion had objects that flew or pushed and pulled. It was tiring at the Athletics Carnival and lots of our parents came and watched. For English, we have made great posters that are information texts with collaged pictures on them.

It’s been a wonderfully busy and exciting time in Year 3, full of learning, creativity, and active participation!
On May 21, we joined millions of students around the country for National Simultaneous Storytime, reading The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel and Danny Snell. Students loved following the journey of a curious cat who finds adventure on the road — it sparked laughter, questions, and some very creative storytelling of our own!
Science came to life with a Big Bang Science incursion focused on the topic of heat. Students explored how heat moves, what materials conduct heat best, and how heat changes the state of different materials. There were hands-on experiments, exciting demonstrations, and plenty of wide-eyed wonder.
In Design Technology, students were given a special engineering challenge: design an egg mover capable of carefully transporting the fragile egg of a curlew without breaking it. While real curlew eggs were in short supply, we put our designs to the test using marbles — and the results were impressive! Students demonstrated creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork as they refined their prototypes and evaluated their effectiveness.
Our Year 3 students showed fantastic energy and team spirit during the Sports Carnival! They took part in sprints, relays, novelty events, and ball games. It was a morning filled with cheering, trying our best, and supporting our friends — a wonderful showcase of sportsmanship and fun.
Do You Have an Analogue Clock at Home? We are beginning our new Maths unit on telling time to the minute using analogue clocks. It would be helpful for students to practice at home by reading clocks, timing activities, and noticing how time is measured throughout the day. If you have an analogue clock at home, please encourage your child to use it — every minute counts!

FREE PRIMARY BOOKSTORE - DONATIONS
If you have children’s picture books, chapter books or non-fiction books suitable for Primary aged students that you no longer need, we’d love for you to donate them to our FREE BOOKSTORE.
Books should be in good condition and can be left at either Primary Office or College Administration. Thank you for your support.
This term, our students enjoyed an exciting and educational day out at Osprey House Environmental Centre. Surrounded by mangroves, wetlands, and wildlife, they explored the natural world firsthand, learning about local ecosystems, conservation efforts, and the importance of protecting our environment. From guided nature walks to interactive exhibits and birdwatching, the day was filled with curiosity, discovery, and appreciation for the world around us.
A big thank you to the Osprey House and the Tangalooma EcoMarines teams for inspiring our young environmental stewards!

Thank you, Mr Osman, for organising this wonderful opportunity for our students.

The Interschool Winter Sport Season is currently completing its fourth round of competition. Whites Hill has fielded the highest number of teams for many years. It is really rewarding as the Sport Coordinator to see so many students wishing to represent Whites Hill in Interschool Sport.
District Trials and Met East Sport Trials
District trials for a number of sports for both Lytton District, South District and Met East have already taken place. Unfortunately due to the wet weather, there were a number of District and Met East Trials postponed and have now occurred.
There are still a number of trials to go, so if you are interested in trialling for a District/Regional Sport, please come and see me for details.
Interhouse Athletics Carnival
The Interhouse Athletics was held on our last two days of this term. The Field Events were on Thursday 26th June and Track Events on Friday 27th June.
The District Athletics Carnival is in Week 4 of Term 3 on Monday 4th August and Friday 8th August at QSAC Stadium. More details will follow once our college team is selected from the Interhouse Carnival.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT WHSC
The final week of the term has seen the celebration of the incredible efforts of our Secondary students who have achieved their bronze or silver CARES awards.
Each of our students who received awards will now have their badges to wear with pride each day. Secondary students are enjoying spending their CARES points at the tuckshop as well as using their points to offset costs of some of their activities. The amazing efforts of our students are always a reason to celebrate!
Every fortnight we focus more specifically one of our CARES values - Cooperation, Achievement, Respect, Enthusiasm or Safety. In the last two weeks we have focused on Safety in Primary and Enthusiasm in Secondary. We demonstrated these values when we participated in the Primary and Secondary Athletics Carnivals, Sports Aerobics competition, Year 10 Subject Information Evening and Synapses Ignite.
Whites Hill State College continues to embrace Positive Behaviour for Learning; our CARES values are at the centre of everything we do each day!
The PBL Team
This term we welcomed the R U OK? Conversation Convoy as it rolled into WHSC. The R U OK? Conversation Convoy travels throughout Australia to help us understand the important role we all play in looking out for our friends, family and colleagues.
Students and staff connected with each other as we played games, had conversations and learnt the power of simply asking R U OK? Remember - a conversation could change a life.

THE RESILIENCE PROJECT AT WHSC
Our school partnership aims to INSPIRE and ENGAGE the whole college community – students, staff, parents and carers through GEM (Gratitude, Empathy & Mindfulness) and emotional literacy principles. We are committed to supporting the mental health and well being of every student.
Recently several of our teachers attended The Resilience Project Educators Conference, gaining valuable insights, tools and strategies to strengthen student wellbeing in the classroom. We’re incredibly grateful to our P & C for generously funding this professional development opportunity. Their support ensures our staff are equipped with the latest knowledge to help students thrive, both emotionally and academically.
Mental health plays a crucial role in how our children learn, build relationships, and manage life’s challenges. Through this program, students develop practical ways to take care of their mental health – learning to reflect on what they are grateful for, show kindness to others and be more present in the moment.
Our partnership program with TRP consists of weekly lessons for all of our students as well as access for our parents and carers to the Parent and Carer Hub. Links have been sent to our college families which give access to some excellent strategies that can support the learning and development of our students and also support you as parents and carers. Thank you for being partners in your child’s wellbeing.
Mary-Anne Hollands
Head of Department - Student Services
As part of Reconciliation Week, students and staff gathered in the Student Plaza to celebrate First Nations culture through a powerful live music performance led by one of our student groups accompanied by Mr Jordan.
BRILLIANT RESULTS - 100% ACHIEVED!
Congratulations to our Year 12 students who achieved a perfect score on their IA1 assessments. Their dedication and commitment to their studies paid off and we are so very proud of them!

100 DAYS OF SCHOOL LEFT CELEBRATIONS
Our Years 12s celebrated an important milestone this term - 100 days of school to go before they graduate! Students were invited to come to school dressed as they imagine themselves in the future. They started the morning with breakfast, cookies and cake!

SECONDARY FRENCH BILINGUAL PROGRAM INFORMATION SESSION
This information session will explain how the French and Australian Curriculum are harmonised from Year 7 to 9. The pathway for French Bilingual Students for Year 10, 11 and 12 will be outlined.
In our Year 8 LOTE class students role-played as customers and waiters in a typical French restaurant setting as part of their assessment on ordering food in French.
The students wore berets and performed their dialogues with class French music playing in the background. It was a fun and engaging cultural experience!

WHSC reminds Yr 12 families that all year 12 accounts must be settled for students to attend any non-compulsory activity including the formal and the final week’s activities. This includes Student Resource Scheme, certificate courses and academy costs. Statements will be sent out more regularly for Year 12 students, to help manage the costs of this last year of schooling. If you have questions or wish to set up a payment plan, please contact the finance office to discuss.
UPCOMING EVENTS PAYMENT SCHEDULE
Please be aware that every event – excursion or incursion – comes with a final date for permission and payment.
This is so final numbers can be advised to the businesses involved and payments made to them.
NO LATE PAYMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
Please note that we have a strict no pay no go policy, both parent permission and payment is required by the due date, otherwise unfortunately your child will not be able to attend.
